Mini Project One: understanding trees

Our first mini project is about understanding various key aspects of trees. To do this we created a 4-step process.

Starting with the signature outer contour (shape) using line drawing in step 1, we moved on to step 2 using tonal analysis to understand basic form and shape.

Step 3 was to investigate the colours using a abstract grid system to build up a colour swatch version of the tree. This also allowed us to practice mixing colours and how to load and unload a brush.

The final step, 4, was to use the three pieces of research to represent the whole tree as presented in a photographic image.

We did this on both evenings over two weeks and here are the first results. Also shown are some of the latest stages from our family portraits project, started before Christmas, plus a few individual pieces done at home.
