We are now back for the new term and into our 2nd week, Monday and Tuesday evenings.
We welcomed new members to our groups: Marie, Stephen and Yvette, Fiona, and Mary, - great start with your drawings and paintings guys!
In week one we did the usual induction, a quiz to check our knowledge from last year, followed by a return the key basic skills of seeing by drawing: how to interpret colour as a grey scale - drawing colours using only a graphite stick to show the range of tones from dark to light; drawing in line only to see the shapes and 2D construction in our chosen image. Both the quiz and the drawing exercise helped us to assess where we are at the start of the new course and to set some new goals for our work.
In week two started the first of our 2-week projects. The first one is "Working in Mixed Media" where we started with a traditional watercolour glazing technique - where the colours are laid down on top of each other in transparent washes (glazes) allowing the white paper underneath to give brilliance and luminosity to the colours. We did this wet-on-wet to enable maximum contrast between the two paint mediums to be used. Next week we apply the opaque, thickly textured layers using acrylic paints.
Here are the first-stage wet-onwet watercolour paintings:
